Trip Details

A week of trekking alongside the last nomads of the High Atlas

In the desert plateaus of the Central High Atlas, the age-old traditions of the nomadic Aït Atta tribe are perpetuated. Far from the modern world, these nomadic families undertake their bi-annual transhumance between desert and mountain.
In spring, they leave the scorching sun of Djebel Saghro to ascend the cooler southern slopes of the High Atlas, reaching Lake Izoughar. After a week of transhumance, the nomadic families settle for the summer around the lake, where they find water and food for their herds.
Then, with the first snowfall, the Aït Atta load their dromedaries and lead their herds towards the vast southern plains to escape the cold that has returned to the Atlas.

In the company of this Berber tribe with a pastoral tradition, we invite you on a timeless journey. Following the rhythm of the caravan, you will travel through a lunar landscape of eroded plateaus, rocky peaks, and canyons... dotted with green oases.
We embark on a week-long trek, paced by the nomads and their herd: goats, sheep, dromedaries, mules, donkeys, and dogs... not forgetting the chickens. With tents and equipment loaded onto dromedaries and mules, babies and children harnessed onto donkeys, and women watching over the goats, the men will guide the herd and the caravan through the foothills of the Atlas, crossing passes and wadis. Alongside the nomads, you will participate in daily tasks, loading the animals, and camp life... A return to basics.

The vast plains surrounding Marrakech recede as you head towards Azilal. The road winds playfully from one valley to another, leading into the heart of the High Atlas, where the landscape becomes more rugged: this is mountain country. Your muleteer awaits you at the Tizi n'Tirghsit pass (2629 m) for a picnic. Following a shepherd's path along the slopes of Djebel Azourki, you'll reach the Touda ecolodge, located in the village of Zawyat Oulmzi (2200 m).

Accommodation: Touda Ecolodge.
Meals:
breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

From Tamda, the caravan sets off towards the vast expanses of southern Morocco to escape the first snows of the High Atlas. This first day of transhumance leads us to Lake Izourar. We meet the nomadic family not far from Touda, to reach the first bivouac together on the Izourar plateau (2500 m).

2 hours of walking.

Accommodation: in tents.
Meals:
breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The caravan heads towards the Tizi-n-Igrourne pass. This is an approach stage to the high passes of the Central High Atlas. The ascent is gentle and gradual, through a wild and austere environment. Arrival at Aqqa-n-Izoughar, with a bivouac at the foot of the Tizi-n-Igrourne pass.

4 hours 30 minutes of walking.

Accommodation: in tents.
Meals:
breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Today, we discover magnificent high-mountain landscapes and trek through Jbel Amzourka, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. We cross the Tizi-n-Igrourne pass (2700 m) and the Tizi-n-Tamgoumart pass (3300 m), then descend towards Igrouren, where we rejoin our nomadic camp.

6 hours of walking.

Accommodation: in tents.
Meals:
breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

After crossing the high passes, the caravan skirts Jbel Abouch, following the Akka-n-Mejdag river, which is lined with pastures. We delve into the heart of the Atlas, into the territory of the Mgoun tribes, discovering a succession of mountains with lunar landscapes. From the summit of Jbel Abouch, we admire breathtaking views stretching as far as the eye can see to the Jbel Saghro massif. Camp is set up at Assfalou Zouggagh.

5 hours of walking.

Accommodation: in tents.
Meals:

The caravan continues its descent towards the vast southern plains; this morning, we head for Akka-n-Imjgarne. We follow a dry riverbed upstream to reach the Taghbalout-n-Tizi spring, where we water the animals and replenish our water supply for the evening's bivouac. We continue our ascent to the Tizi-n-Toudate pass, the 'mouflon pass', at 2700 m. Then we descend towards Akka-n-Imjgarne; our path then winds along the wadis and leads us to Imjgarne, where we rejoin our nomadic camp.
